First Impression

Ancient stone columns thrust from the forest floor like broken ribs, their surfaces blackened by some long-ago conflagration that left the smell of charcoal permanently embedded in the moss-covered ruins. The skeletal remains of what was once a magnificent temple to the gold dragon Aurethys now stand as a monument to failure, where twisted metal that might once have been ceremonial braziers jut from cracked foundations like accusing fingers. A persistent low moan echoes through the hollow spaces—whether from wind through the ruins or something more unsettling is unclear.

Atmosphere

This place breathes defeat and ancient sorrow. Shafts of sickly green sunlight filter through the canopy above, casting everything in an unhealthy pallor that makes even the hardiest adventurer's skin look corpse-like. The air tastes of copper and old smoke, while every footstep on the cracked stone seems to echo with unnatural resonance. Wild thorns have claimed much of the sacred ground, their barbs glistening with morning dew that never quite dries. Yet beneath the decay, traces of former glory persist—golden inlay still glints in protected crevices, and the craftsmanship of the remaining architecture speaks to a time when this place channeled divine power.

Key Features

  • The Shattered Altar: Once a magnificent golden dais where the dragon mask of Aurethys was displayed, now a heap of scorched marble chunks surrounding a crater filled with stagnant black water. Strange reflections move in its depths that don't match what stands above, and touching the water causes brief, painful visions of the temple's destruction.

Inhabitants

Brother Matthias, a grizzled former paladin turned hermit, has made a crude shelter in the temple's surviving vestry. His weathered face bears ritual scars, and his once-golden holy symbol now hangs tarnished around his neck. Consumed by guilt over his failure to protect the sanctuary during the invasion twenty years ago, he tends to the ruins with obsessive dedication while slowly losing his grip on sanity. He speaks in riddles about "the mask's return" and grows violent if anyone suggests abandoning the site. Three tormented spirits—former priests who died defending the temple—manifest during times of stress, their ethereal forms bearing the wounds that killed them. They cannot rest until the dragon mask is restored to its rightful place, but their attempts to communicate this come across as threatening apparitions that terrify most visitors.

Secrets & Layers

  • The dragon mask of Aurethys wasn't destroyed in the invasion—Brother Matthias secretly buried it beneath the altar's crater to prevent its theft, but the protective wards he placed have begun to fail, causing the artifact to slowly corrupt the surrounding area with necromantic energy.
  • The "invasion" wasn't by foreign enemies but by the temple's own parishioners, who rose up when they discovered the priests were using the mask's power to control local politics and hoarding donations meant for the poor. The official story of heroic defenders dying against raiders is a lie.
  • The black substance weeping from the columns is liquefied guilt and shame given form by the mask's twisted magic—it can be harvested as a component for powerful enchantments, but doing so requires the harvester to experience the emotional torment that created it.

Adventure Hooks

  1. The Mask Stirs: Windale's children have begun having nightmares of a golden dragon calling to them from the woods, and three have sleepwalked toward the sanctuary before being found. The town desperately needs someone to investigate what's drawing the children and put an end to it before one doesn't make it home.

  2. Matthias's Last Request: The hermit approaches the party with a cryptic map and begs them to "return the heart to its home before the corruption spreads to innocent soil." He's too mad to explain clearly, but he's detected that the buried mask's failing wards will soon turn the entire forest into a cursed wasteland unless properly restored or destroyed.

  3. Sins of the Fathers: A wealthy merchant from Windale hires the party to retrieve his grandfather's "lost donation" from the ruined temple, claiming it's a family heirloom of great sentimental value. In truth, it's evidence that his family collaborated with the corrupt priests, and he fears the restless spirits will eventually reveal his ancestors' crimes to the town.

GM Notes

  • Use the sanctuary's oppressive atmosphere to build tension slowly—describe the physical discomfort of being here before introducing supernatural elements
  • Brother Matthias can serve as either a helpful guide or dangerous obstacle depending on how players approach the situation; his madness makes him unpredictable but not necessarily evil
  • The corrupted mask creates an excellent moral dilemma: destroying it ends the curse but eliminates a powerful artifact, while cleansing it requires significant sacrifice and risk
  • Random encounters here should focus on psychological horror over combat—phantom sounds, disturbing visions, and gradual equipment corrosion work better than monster attacks
